Jindal pushes for more energy efficiency in state government

The Associated Press : January 31, 2008

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Gov. Bobby Jindal wants state government a bit greener.

Jindal issued an executive order this week pushing for state agencies to set energy efficiency goals and shrink energy use, by adopting more recycling programs and replacing state vehicles with fuel-efficient and hybrid ones.

The order doesn't set a target for energy efficiency standards or strict guidelines for how to make state government greener. It requires the governor's Division of Administration to develop a three-year plan with state agencies to set energy efficiency goals for state office buildings and facilities. The plan is due by July 30.

Each state department is required to find ways to reduce waste and adopt recycling programs. State purchasing practices will include a review of ways to improve energy efficiency, and state agencies are instructed to expand their use of alternative fuel and fuel-efficient vehicles, according to the executive order.
